the risk of scraping your bumper
against the door of the angry.
apologizing, though you’d admit
you were thinking of a wallet.
drenched in noontime’s tears.
there goes your vacation.

the one she asked of.
the one she thought you were planning.
when you drove five inches
from her callused shoulders.
rotating, to stiffen
at the height of your stupidity.

so you run
and feign stories
about luxury apartments
five blocks down.
but you’ll never afford
a cup of brie.

a cheek smeared with pollen,
you inquire into the worthiness
of a summer alone.
ask how it came,
an influential time
in a life not uncomplicated.
