she took it as an insult
when I said, “Don’t worry.”
she never needed Botox
but assured me I would
because mirrors in one’s pocket
aren’t so kind.

kept a mouth shut,
pens just splayed
like spokes of a fan
awkwardly saying their “yes”s
to every question I had
regarding false gratuities.

I knew at the hotel doorstep
we wouldn’t stay for long,
but to hear her cry, chest so pressed
without a glass of water,
brought me to listless wonder
in time with lights turned off.
